SJ was formed from a branch
of the old Swedish State Railways, known as SJ. When the former public
enterprise was converted to six independent limited companies at the
end of 2000, the company dealing with passenger traffic took over the
name of SJ.
SJ was divided up into six
independent limited companies. The six units which jointly made up the
old SJ (passenger traffic, freight transport, maintenance, real
estate, terminal service and IT) has started working on their own
development based on their new commercial foundation.
The six units work in
different markets, have different business logics, different core
competencies and different foundations for development. They have been
converted into companies to develop in their respective fields and
compete within their various markets. The former unit passenger traffic
is since 2001 called SJ, the major rail travel company in Sweden.
Today the Internet and
digital communication are transforming the everyday lives of
individuals and companies alike. When SJ was founded in 1856, it was
also the new-fangled communication that fundamentally changed Swedish
society. Owners: The Swedish state via the Ministry of Industry and
